Unidentified Lighting Objects 2009 exhibition is here! Check us out!

After more than 5 hours of hard work putting the pieces together and coordinating all designers' work, we had finally finished the set-up of the ULO 2009 exhibition. Kudos to the collective, all the designers for your hard work, and of course with help from Elaine in the final set-up and the 2 husbands (Chee Huang and Pang), not to forget the ubiquitous Baby Tino. Above are some of the pictures taken of the exhibition area prior to the "hoarding" up of the space to protect the delicate pieces. But we would like to note that the hoarding would all be taken off during the private event on the 31st, so please keep a look out then.

Also, there are some questions regarding the exhibition and I will like to note to all designers that the exhibition would be held from the 23rd to the 30th of October 2009 at Level 2 of IKEA Tampines and it is open to public. However, the private sale and reception (the invites had been passed to all designers) is scheduled on the 31st of October, from 7.30pm onwards, at Level 2 of IKEA Tampines.

Unidentified Lighting Objects 2009 designs...

It was a hectic yet exciting weekend seeing for the very first time the designers and their creations. The two days had been a fruitful exchange of ideas, contacts and inspirations. Through their creations, we thought we had known them individually in a small way, as each lamp reflected a little of their unique personality, culture or lifestyle. We remember most, the stories the designers told behind each lamp; it's origins to the making.

Unidentified Lighting Objects 2009 is here!

After a few months of planning and coordination, the Unidentified Lighting Object 2009 is finally here! We are very fortunate to have the gracious support of IKEA Singapore as our main event sponsor, and the support of the Singapore Archifest 2009 committee to have this event as one of the fringe event for the Archifest 2009. We are sure all designers had fun conceptualizing their ideas and are very happy to have a varied range of invited designers for the event, from fashion designer, to artists, product designers, illustrator and architects. The exhibition of all designs would start from 23rd of October and the private sale of all the designs would be held on the 31st of October. So, please keep a look out for this space, as we would be unravelling all designer's creation in this space, and please guess which IKEA product they were originally constructed from.

imagine your cube could be transformed into a stage...and how lights could bring out the patterns within a space.

1001 ways to light a cube

whenlightswork collective had been invited by the Ministry of Education to host the lighting workshop as part of the planned programs for the Art and Music Education Conference (AMEC) 2009. The main focus of the workshop is thus, for the participants to appreciate light in space. Hence, we had planned for a series of tasks for the participants to discuss, as a group, for them to relate to lighting design through visuals. Then, we would proceed to conceptualization and execution of the proposed lighting concept. 

The workshop had been divided into two different sections, due to the time limit posed by the conference organizers. Firstly, we shall start with the grouping of images in accordance to certain identified themes and the participants would need to document and present their ideas at the end of the discussion.

With these ideas in mind, the participants were encouraged to explore and experiment on 1001 ways to light a cube, based on the ideas they had extracted from the visuals from part 1 of the workshop. The participants were encouraged to explore different variations and possiblities of lighting a cube and similarly, the results were documented and presented to the entire studio after the workshop.

The results of the workshop had been rather "surprising" as the participants explored and experiment with forms, shadows and colours. And the participants had, within a three hour workshop, understand the basics to lighting appreciation in space and the relation of light to form and geometry, as well as the ability to conceptualize from drawings to miniature mockups.
